Decarbonization Work at Częstochowa CHP Plant

Mostostal Warszawa has signed a contract with Fortum Power and Heat Polska for the modernization of the fuel transport system at the Częstochowa Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant. The contract, signed on December 20, 2024, is valued at €11.1 million and PLN 85.6 million.

Scope of Work

Mostostal Warszawa will be responsible for constructing the external fuel supply system. The work will include building a new inclined gallery, railway-based biomass unloading infrastructure, and expanding the existing transport system. These upgrades will significantly improve supply logistics and transport efficiency. In addition to truck transport, biomass will also be delivered by rail, further enhancing the ecological aspect of the process.

Eco-Friendly Biomass – A Sustainable Energy Source

The CHP plant will use certified wood biomass, consisting of 90% sawdust from sawmills and 10% agricultural-origin sawdust (e.g., from fruit orchards). Annually, the facility will consume up to 350,000 tons of domestically sourced biomass.

Project Timeline

The decarbonization project at the Częstochowa CHP Plant is set to begin in the spring of 2025. As part of the €100 million investment, the facility will be adapted to use 100% biomass as fuel, nearly eliminating CO₂ emissions.

The project is expected to be completed by 2027.
