About the investment

The investment, which was carried out by Mostostal Warszawa, included the reconstruction of the Gdańsk Główny railroad station building at 2 Podwale Grodzkie Street. The building was commissioned in 1900 and has remained in good technical and aesthetic condition until now. Damage from World War II, post-war fire and subsequent upgrades did not significantly affect the material historic substance and the overall appearance of the building.

.

The reconstruction of the station was aimed at restoring the original condition of the building, i.e. the architectural form of the facade and roof, restoration of the steel carpentry of the windows located in the lobby with glass filling in the form of stained glass, restoration of the historical layout of some of the rooms or the color scheme of the passenger hall. In addition to the reconstruction and renovation of the main body of the station, the communication section connecting the station to the existing city tunnels and platforms was rebuilt and expanded. The building's original color scheme and historic lighting in the form of spherical chandeliers were restored. Among other things, cartouches with the coats of arms of Pomeranian cities were reconstructed, and the floors were lined with granite slabs. On the facade, surfaces finished in brick, granite and sandstone were cleaned and restored. The roofing on the entire building was replaced, with "Marseille" tiles. Both, the shape of the roof, its covering with characteristic colorful patterns were recreated on the basis of archival photos and conservation recommendations. The facility also received a new illumination, which at night wonderfully highlights the beautiful architecture of the station building and accentuates all the visible details on its facade.

.

The investment worth nearly PLN 120 million gross comprehensive reconstruction of Gdańsk Główny railroad station is the largest project implemented under the 2016-2023 Railway Station Investment Program. The sole investor is Polish State Railways S.A. The reconstruction of Gdańsk Główny Railway Station has been subsidized by the European Union as part of the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Program.

During the work, we reported, among other things, on the discovery of a note from 50 years ago found in a bottle, as well as the challenge of installing stained glass windows - click to read more.
