A specially designed concrete mix supplied on a 24-hour basis by 6 concrete plants and 54 concrete mixers and Mostostal Warszawa's lab located at the construction site – these are the details of the recently initiated foundation slab concreting process for one of two boiler rooms, marking yet another stage of the Opole Power Plant rebuilding process.

The foundation slab concreting process for boiler building no. 5 is yet another stage of the complex process of building two new hard coal-fired 1800 MW boiler rooms at the Opole Power Plant. The project is completed by the consortium of Mostostal Warszawa SA, Polimex-Mostostal, Rafako SA, and Alstom Power Sp. z o.o.

During 5 days of intensive works, the 78 x 83 m foundation slab will be filled with a 3,0 – 3,8 thick layer of concrete. The foundation's area will total 12 429 square meters and 18 420 cubic meters of concrete mix will be used to concrete the area.

In the case of such a significant project as the expansion of the Opole Power Plant, quality of the selected materials is of high importance. This is why a concrete mix designed specifically for this purpose and featuring low-heating properties was used to complete the project. Thanks to this technology, the risk of cracks forming on the concrete and ultimately leading to structure damage will be minimized. Research works will also be carried out by Mostostal Warszawa's lab at the construction site.

"An on-site certified Mostostal Warszawa laboratory will perform quality tests on concrete mix supplied for the purposes of concreting unit 5 boiler room foundations. Concrete mix will be sampled to test compressive strength, water absorbability, and water permeation properties. In addition, heat gain and temperature properties of the concrete mix will also be monitored with the help of special probes to help select the optimum concrete curing method. Our company is carrying out these works in a joint effort with the Faculty of Concrete Structures at the Łódź University of Technology," said Kamil Wituń, Main Technology Department Manager at Mostostal Warszawa.

The year 2015 is the time of intensified construction works concerning expansion of the Opole Power Plant. In 2016, priority will be given to assembly works concerning, among others, the machine room, boiler room, boiler pressure section, and technical sections for all the devices will prevail. According to the contract, unit 5 should be commissioned in the second half of 2018 and unit 6 – at the beginning of 2019.
