Experts of Mostostal Warszawa on advancements in the Opole investment during the conference of IGEiOŚ

02 November 2016

On 27-28 October a conference was held in the Opole Power Plant, which was attended by a specialist group of experts. The talks concerned progress in construction of two 900 MW units. At the invitation of the Chamber of Commerce of Energy and Environment Protection (IGEiOŚ) Mostostal Warszawa joined the organisation of this project. Further attendees included Andrzej Goławski, President, and Paweł Żbikowski, Director of the Opole Project.

Construction of power units nos. 5 and 6 in the Opole Power Plant is the major infrastructure project which is being implemented in Poland for over 20 years. The two new power units of a total gross capacity of 1800 MWe will replace by units being decommissioned. They are going to generate up to 12.5 TWh electricity yearly, which will allow satisfying needs of more than 4 million households. Works are being executed day and night. The project site comprises an area of 4.5 ha, and the crew comprises already over 4 000 people. The value of the contract as such is PLN 11.6 billion. Construction of such a scale is rightly receiving a great deal of attention.

During the conference entitled “Progress of the project in the Opole Power Plant – construction of two 900 MW units and the new role of General Electric” a group of representatives of companies involved in the project came together, along with sectoral professionals. Mostostal Warszawa was a partner of this event besides PGE GiEK SA, Polimex-Mostostal SA and General Electric.

“New units in Opole will contribute to achieving better net effectiveness in the generation of electricity and will help reduce carbon dioxide emission. What is more, they are in line with objectives of the energy and climate policy of the European Union and meet all national and EU standards related to environment protection. Mostostal Warszawa has become greatly involved in this project. Currently it is one of key investments in the company portfolio. It is also a great challenge for us, but at the same time a unique experience – there is no other company on the market together with entities of the Capital Group that would be able to implement such an extensive and complicated works scope on its own as we are doing in connection with construction of power units in Opole. Following completion of this project Mostostal Warszawa will have at its disposal unique experience which will enable it to compete among others for foreign contracts” – emphasised President Goławski, who attended the conference.

The topics of the conference concerned the advancement and progress of works. An analysis was made of construction organisation, completed works and the course of construction and assembly works. Also taken up was the role of the Power Plant for the region, as well as the importance of the project as such in Opole. One of the speakers during the conference was Paweł Żbikowski, Director of the Opole Project. His presentation outlined the implementation of construction and assembly works, with particular emphasis on the assembly of boilers.

“Assembly of the boiler’s pressure parts comprise the execution of over 90 thousand welds per a single unit. Those works constitute a challenge as such, its planning took 13 months, and it is being implemented without any delays. It should be emphasised that the average assembly time for units class 900 MWe equals to 15 months. This also comprises the coordination of assembly works on the pressurised parts, steel structures, electrical works and start-up executed on a single facility by three consortium partners. We are already getting ready to pressure tests of boiler no. 5 planned for the subsequent year” – summarised Paweł Żbikowski, Director of the Opole Project from Mostostal Warszawa.

The lecturers also comprised representatives of the investor – PGE GiEK SA and partners of the consortium implementing the contract in the Opole Power Plant in the Opole Power Plant: Polimex-Mostostal SA and General Electric. Participants of the conference comprised Beata Stelmach (Board Chairman of GE Power), Marian Bosowski (Deputy Director General IGEiOŚ), Marek Meadow (Vice-President. Investment and Wealth Management GiEK PGE SA) and Mirosław Skowron – Board Chairman – Polimex Energetyka. This gathering of a group of professionals was an occasion to exchange remarks and experience under cooperation inside the consortium, as well as tightening relations with the investor. The meeting was also a good occasion to have a discussion concerning development directions of the Polish energy policy. At the end of the conference the participants could see first-hand the scale of the project and see the progress of works from the viewing platform.

The construction of power units in Opole is being executed by the consortium consisting of Mostostal Warszawa, Polimex-Mostostal and Rafako, in cooperation with GE Power. According to the schedule unit No. 5 is to be commissioned in July 2018, and unit No. 6 in February 2019. The current works advancement has already exceeded 60%.
