Block No. 5 at the Opole Power Plant is in Operation

On 31 May 2019, Block No. 5 at the Opole Power Plant began working as a part of the National Power System. The unit was put into operation two weeks ahead of schedule.

During the last months, apart from the necessary technical measurements, optimization of the combustion process and adjustments to auxiliary systems, the guarantee measurements and a 720-hour test of uninterrupted work was carried out. It was necessary to check the proper functioning of all elements of the power block. Block No. 5 has been equipped with main and auxiliary systems ensuring functional operation, in connection with the alignment of existing power units no. 1-4. On 30 May 2019. The investor - PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna (a company from the PGE Capital Group) received a license to generate electricity from the unit.

In relation with the transfer of unit no. 5 to usage, Mostostal Warszawa received from the Investor a Closing Execution Certificate.

- Thanks to the commitment, skills and experience of the Team implementing this largest investment in Poland for last 30 years, we have completed task by the agreed date - Jorge Calabuig Ferre, Vice President of the Board of Mostostal Warszawa stated. - We have again shown that as Mostostal Warszawa, we can efficiently carry out tasks with a high degree of technological advancement, and at the same time remain extremely responsible from the point of view of energy security.

Block No. 5 with 900 MW of gross power is fired with hard coal. The use of the latest technologies allowed to achieve net efficiency in the production of electricity above 45% and enabled significant reduction of the plant's environmental footprint, including a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by about 25% per unit of energy produced, thus contributing to the latest EU policy energy and climate objectives. 

- Construction of block 5 was a great challenge, both in terms of engineering, technology, logistics and design. When we started work a few years ago, we were sure that the potential of Mostostal Warszawa allows for the efficient implementation of the investment. We were correct, as evidenced by putting the block into operation before the deadline - says Paweł Żbikowski, Director of the Energy and Industry Area in Mostostal Warszawa.

The investment is the largest infrastructure project since 1989 and currently the largest industrial investment in Europe. The investment worth over PLN 11.6 billion gross is carried out by PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna, a company from the PGE Capital Group. At the request of PGE GiEK SA, the contractor is a consortium composed of Mostostal Warszawa, Rafako, Polimex-Mostostal and GE Power, who is the general designer, supplier of key equipment and consortium representative.

Mostostal Warszawa is still working on the second unit in Opole Power Plant - unit no. 6. The block is planned to start operations until 30 September 2019.
