Another use of composites in a bridge structure

29 June 2020
Lightweight bridge panels made of FPR composite, developed by the Research and Development Department of Mostostal Warszawa, significantly shortening the construction process and ensuring maximum protection against corrosion.

The footbridge, which was established in Ozorków, connects the banks of the Bzura River. It is located in the central part of the city park and is noticeable from afar due to its characteristic shape and white color.

This is the second contract we have implemented after the footbridge in Nowy Sącz, which is the implementation of the developed technology in a commercial investment - says Juliusz Żach, Head of Research and Development at Mostostal Warszawa.

The panels were manufactured, under the supervision of specialists from the Research and Development Department, based on the know-how of Mostostal Warszawa, developed at previous bridges of FRP composites. The practical experience gained during the construction of the footbridge in Ozorków is currently used to prepare further innovative projects. Click to read more about the research and development activities carried out by Mostostal Warszawa.

In addition to the original aesthetic features, the footbridge also uses unique technical and material solutions. The steel structure has been fitted with bridging plates made of FRP composite - a fiberglass laminate and epoxy resin. Also noteworthy is the pavement surface made of polyaspargine resin with phosphor. This is probably the first such application in the world. The surface has photoluminescent properties - emits soft green light in the dark. This increases the safety of use at night and is an additional attraction - says Lech Własak from the Research and Development Department of Mostostal Warszawa.

Similarly to previous implementations, the construction was supported by the Mostostal Warszawa Infrastructure Area - the specialist works were supervised by Marcin Braś, Works Manager.

Technical data of the footbridge:
Span length: 17.44 m
Theoretical spread: 16.94 m
Span width: 3.12 m
Usable width: 2.50 m
Construction height: 1.47 m
Payload: 5 kN / m2
Weight: 10 tons
