Another large-scale concreting operation in Opole ends with success!

27 July 2015

Another stage of concreting work involving two new hard coal-fired boilers at the Opole Power Plant has been completed. Foundations for boiler No. 6 have been laid, making it the most extensive work of this type in Europe.

Four concrete pumps were used during the initial stage and as many as seven pumps during the crucial phase. Mostostal Warszawa employees used 18,500 cubic metres of concrete during 115 hours of continuous work. Next, the upper concrete surface was completed and the curing process was initiated – the concrete was covered with layers of polystyrene foam to maintain the correct temperature inside the block.

"The concreting of boiler No. 6 is our second task of this magnitude completed at the Opole Power Plant. The experience and logistics process developed while concreting the first boiler allowed us to perform this operation even faster. On Saturday night, we successfully completed the concreting work. At 00:10 the last cubic metres of concrete were poured," said Julian Kiełbasa, Site Manager on behalf of Mostostal Warszawa.

Power units 5 and 6 will be commissioned in July 2018 and March 2019. Each unit will use 4.1 million tons of hard coal to provide 900 MW of power.
