80 years of Mostostal Warszawa: the turn of the 1950s and 1960s

07 October 2025

We continue our journey through time to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Mostostal Warszawa. In the next installments of this series, we look back at the key moments and landmark projects that have shaped both the company’s history and the development of Polish construction.

Let’s travel back to 1958 – a time of change, growth, and major reconstruction in the heart of Warsaw. It was then that the Bridge and Steel Structure Construction Company Mostostal underwent a significant transformation.

The company was reorganized and merged with other plants in Poland, forming the Union of Steel Structures and Industrial Equipment “Mostostal” based in Warsaw. This created a nationwide network of production plants and construction enterprises responsible for designing, manufacturing, and delivering steel structures, bridges, viaducts, and industrial facilities.

The Grand Theatre in Warsaw

At that time, Mostostal Warszawa took part in rebuilding two of the capital’s most important landmarks. The first was the Grand Theatre, which had been almost completely destroyed during World War II.

Thanks to the efforts of our engineers and the support of the Social Fund for the Reconstruction of the Capital, a modern, expanded opera house was built – considered one of the most technically advanced theatres in the world at that time. The grand opening took place on November 19, 1965. Mostostal returned to the project in the late 1990s, completing the installation of the Apollo Quadriga – the monumental sculpture that now adorns the building’s façade and stands as one of Warsaw’s most recognizable symbols.

The Reconstruction of the Royal Castle

The second project of exceptional importance was the reconstruction of the Royal Castle – a symbol of Polish history and sovereignty.

Following the Sejm’s decision of January 20, 1971 to rebuild the castle, Mostostal Warszawa had the honor of contributing to this unique project. Thanks to the dedication of numerous specialists, by July 1974 the Castle had been rebuilt to its structural shell, faithfully recreating its historical appearance.
